Clark and Angeles City Philippines Vacation Spot

The Clark and Angeles City Philippines fun and vacation region continues to delight Filipinos and foreigners as the variety of venues and things to do grows exponentially each year.   Offering a haven of relaxation and entertainment away from the hustle and bustle of Manila, Clark and Angeles City is sure to bring you back time and time again.  Clark today is a combination tourist/business hotspot that covers a massive 28,000 hectares and has many amenities and facilities that rival United States vacation spots.

Angeles City has prospered on its own rite and as a result of Clark’s business and recreation boom and continues to thrive with many dozens of hotels/resorts, restaurants, malls and clubs all within a close reach of the Freeport Zone.

Roads and general infrastructure and conditions in many destinations in the Philippines are sometimes not up to the standards of western countries.  Thanks to the fact the Clark Air Base was originally constructed and inhabited by the U.S. Military, the roads, water, power, traffic control and law enforcement and public safety standards survived even after the Americans vacated and Filipino entrepreneurs took over. The prevailing mentality is one where the rule of law and western style infrastructure are much more prevalent than most other areas of the Philippines.  Most westerners will feel very comfortable within the Clark Zone.

War History Tourism

As a U.S. military base, Clark was considered the largest foreign Air Force base outside of the United States.  The history of the base during WW-II, the Korean War and Vietnam War is significant and colorful.  You will find many historic landmarks and buildings in Clark with markers to help you navigate your way through the interesting, tumultuous war history of the area.  Some fascinating historic spots to visit include the following: Filipino-American Cemetery, the original Japanese Kamikaze West Airfield and cave, the Bataan Death March Marker, Capt. Colin P. Kelly Monument, The President Roxas Death Place Marker, The Freedom Salakot, Lieutenant Boyd D. "Buzz" Wagner Marker, 26th Cavalry Memorial, US Army Air Corps and Philippine Air Force Monument, Japanese Anti-Aircraft Cannons/Guns, Lily Hill (the last stand for the Japanese in WW-II), the Barracks of the Philippine Scouts and U.S. Cavalry, the Clark Parade Grounds, the Col. Stotsenberg Monument, the original Stotsenberg Gate Posts/Markers and many more historic sites.

The Clark Museum of War History

As you enter, the sign at the Clark Museum entrance reads as follows: “It was not in the character of the Filipino to lose hope.  Clark remained a goldmine not only for its geography, expanse of level terrain: solid network of fine roads, buildings, airport now lying beneath a thick mantel of volcanic material.  Rehabilitation work amid the continuing threat from Mount Pinatubo was intimidating.  The 4,500-hectare area was declared Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) in 1993 with Clark Development Corporation (CDC) at the reins.  Clearing the tons of volcanic ashes, Clark chugged on in fits and starts but the volcano quieted down after making it to the history books as one of the largest eruptions in the modern times, the CSEZ took toddler steps, then advanced in strides amid a backdrop of teetering worldwide economy.”

Leaning about Clark starts at the Clark Museum. This fascinating collection of historically significance pieces of history serves as an important repository of artifacts, collections and war-related memorabilia.   There is much to learn as you follow the former Spanish outpost, US Army Air Base, Japanese stronghold, back to an important American Air force installation to today’s Philippine Air Force location and tourist/economic zone. The valuable collections of dioramas, photos, life-sized replicas, war artifacts and paintings is precious to those interested in war history. The bases existence has spanned the Spanish American War, WW-I, WW-II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. On the 2nd floor of the Clark Museum, you will find the Kapampangan Museum which details the regional Kapampangan people’s history and culture.

You can learn about such fascinating things as the birthplace of the Kamikaze at the Museum. Located along Clark’s eastern perimeter, this area was were the devastating aerial attacks on American and Allied ships originated during WW-II.  While the Americans initially believed these coordinated suicide missions originated from northern Luzon, it was later found out that they indeed were launched from Clark.  You can even visit this area with its hidden tunnels and a Japanese marker stands to this day.

Clark is without a doubt one of the most historically significant areas of the Philippines.  The Clark Museum contains enough memorability to keep you busy for a couple of days.

A New International Airport in the Philippines

This Clark International Airport, also known as DMIA, now serves as an alternate international gateway for the Philippines. This newly revitalized public infrastructure has relieving a significant amount of air and vehicle traffic from the Manila Airport.

The existing U.S. military runways left behind at Clark has proved to be a big reward for the country and have contributed to the conversion and ongoing development of a world-class airport.  With two parallel runways each spanning 3.2 kilometers this airport features the countries, and all of Asia’s longest runways. When the first A380 was flown in its testing phase, Clark was chosen as a destination on its maiden flights, due mainly to its extraordinary runway length.

In addition to the world class runways, you’ll also find a newly remodeled and expanded terminal-1 and a brand new, modern and expansive terminal-2 completed to meet the needs of all of the new airlines that have made Clark an important Philippine destination.  Some airlines have made Clark their main hub for destinations in the Philippines and throughout Southeast Asia. At the time of this writing in 2015, the two terminals have a combined yearly capacity of 7 million passengers a year.  By 2016, construction of a new budget terminal designed by a French company, Aéroports de Paris will be completed bringing the yearly passenger capacity to 15 million. By the year 2025 a new master planned terminal and airport runway expansion will bring the total capacity up to 80 million passengers a year making Clark one of the largest airports in the world.

Some of the airlines that fly into Clark include: Asiana Airlines, PALexpress, Emirates Airlines, Jin Air, Qatar Airways, Air Asia, Zest Air, Sea Air, Tiger Airways and Cebu Pacific. There are direct flights to Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and soon, some long-haul flights to Europe, the middle east and north America. DMIA is projected to eventually become the main international gateway for commercial aviation services in the Philippines.

Major Highway Intersections

Clark is at the crossroads of two major Philippines highways.  The NLEX (North Luzon Expressway linking Manila to the northern areas of the Philippines, and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (also known as SCTex). This superhighway connects Subic Bay to the west and Clark and further extends to the Central Techno Park in Tarlac to the north of Clark. These are both modern, separated, multi-lane highways.

Limitless Lodging, Food, Clubs and Leisure Activities

Clark is home to numerous restaurants from budget fast food to high quality five star establishments.  The night life is thriving with bars and dance clubs abounding in Clark proper and many more facilities immediately outside the Freeport Zone in the thriving Angeles City area.

Here you’ll find Fontana Resort with its incredible world class gold course, Country Club and larger American home style villas. Fontana is also the home of the U.S. style water theme park where you can cool down on giant slides and water features.

Another home to a world-class golf course and rental villas is Mimosa Monte Vista Resort and Country Club. The lush green grounds and large canopy trees offer the ultimate in clean air and a restful getaway.

Clark Hotels/Resorts

Besides Fontana and Mimosa, visitors to Clark can choose to stay at a multitude of fine hotels and resorts including Holiday Inn Clark, Hotel Stotsenberg, Oxford Hotel, Hotel Vida, Lohas Hotel, Asiana Greenville Villas, and even an extremely affordable hostel hotel.

Adventure Tourism in Clark/Angeles City - Mount Pinatubo Treking

Adventure seekers will find no lack of excitement in Clark. Try your first sky-diving experience at Omni Aviation, located at the Clark airport. Perhaps something a little tamer is in your plans, such as adventure trekking in the hillsides of Clark or off-road exploration.  One growing and very popular adventure is an aerial flight or a 4-wheel drive vehicle, visit to the crater of the Mt. Pinatubo volcano. Filipino Travel, Seahorse Tours and Omega Travel and Tours are just a few of the companies offering these vehicle excursions while Omni Aviation takes to the skies for the aerial tours.
Those who wish to simply enjoy their leisure time within Clark may opt to spend the day shopping by patronizing any of the many duty free shops or the large, big-city-style SM Clark Mall inside its boundaries.
